地球大气层以外的宇宙空间，又称外层空间或空间。太阳系以内的空间可分为行星空间和行星际空间。行星空间是指行星引力的作用范围，或行星磁层、大气层所及范围。如地球空间,若按地球引力作用范围来确定,其半径距地心约93万公里；若按地球磁层所及范围来确定，其半径距地心约6.5万公里。太阳系行星之间的空间(除行星空间外)称为行星际空间,其半径距太阳约60亿公里。太阳系以外的空间可分为恒星际空间、恒星系空间和星系际空间等。一些国际组织规定，距地球约等于或大于地-月距离（约 38.4万公里）的空间称为深空。有时把地球静止卫星轨道高度（约3.58万公里）及其以下的空间称为近地空间。外层空间的下界至今尚无定论，一般认为下界距地面100多公里。
