在打击车臣反政府武装分子的战斗中，这种微声狙击步枪博得了俄特种部队狙击手们的叫好声。无论是在山野密林里，还是在城区墙角处，俄罗斯狙击手们使用它都取得了“悄悄杀敌”的成功。它叫vss微声狙击步枪。
俄罗斯特种部队狙击小组常把vss微声狙击步枪与as微声突击步枪搭配使用。这两种微声枪外形相似，基本结构也一致，人称“特种枪械双胞胎”。但vss采用胶合板加金属衬板制成的骨架式枪托，不同于as的三角形金属管材枪托，这是让人识别它的主要特征。
vss枪长894毫米，枪管长200毫米，不含瞄准具空枪重2.96公斤。它发射 sp5狙击弹兼用sp6穿甲弹，弹匣容弹量10发。它既能单发射击，也能连发射击，必要时可快速实现射击方式转换，当半自动突击步枪用。它装置有消声器，加上使用亚音速枪弹，膛口噪声减小了，发射时噪声低到130分贝以下，实现了微声狙击。白天，它最大有效射程400米，夜间300米。
