大型涉禽。全长约150厘米。体羽浅灰色。头、喉及上颈裸出部分为橘红色。初级飞羽和初级覆羽为黑色，内侧飞羽白色，修长而垂盖尾部。嘴灰绿色，脚粉红色。
栖息于多草的平原、水田、沼泽湿地及森林边缘。以稻谷及水生植物的根、块茎为食，也取食鱼类和蛙类。7-12月份繁殖，筑巢于沼泽地带成团的植物丛中，以水生植物茎、叶筑成。每窝产卵2枚，绿色或粉红白色，具褐色和紫色斑点。雌鸟孵卵，雄鸟守卫，孵卵期30天，由双亲共同照料幼雏。
