By a thorough study on the choice of flux,a mixture of lithium tetraborate(Li_2B_4O_7) and lithium metaborate(LiBO_2) in the ratio of 1 to 1 was found to be the best mixed flux for the dissolution of Mg-Al-Cr refractory samples(1 g) by giving a smooth,transparent and homogeneous melt.

ZrO_2-SiC composite has been synthesized from zirconite and carbon black by car- bothermal reduction reaction in argon atmosphere,which was added to Al_2O_3-C refractory to study the improvement of oxidation resistance of the Al_2O_3-C refractory,and the effect of heating tem- perature on the synthesis of ZrO_2-SiC composite was also investigated.
