体较大，雄蟾体长平均63毫米，雌蟾为96毫米。头部吻至上眼硷内缘有黑色骨质脊棱。皮肤权粗糙，除头顶部无疣，其他部位满布大小不等的疣粒。耳后腺较大，长椭圆形。腹面密布小疣柱。所有疣上有黑棕色角刺。体色一般为黄棕色，有不规则的棕红色花斑。腹面胸腹部的乳黄色上有深灰色花斑。
白天多隐蔽在土洞或墙缝中，晚上爬向河滩及水塘边。 产卵季节随地区不同而异;在爪哇终年产卵;广州于2-3月间产卵;云南西双版纳在4-5月产卵;在海南岛11-12月产 卵于深水坑内。卵带内有卵两行、受精后三日孵出。
皮肤腺和耳后腺上的分泌物能制成蟾酥、药用。能消灭 田间害虫及防治蚁害，应禁止乱捕。
