日本女作家。生于广岛一农民家庭。在热爱美术的父亲的影响下，1924年入东京女子美术专科学校学习油画。不久家道中落，辍学进工厂做工，并从事工会活动。1926年被捕。出狱后和革命家山代宗吉结婚。1940年，以胁从罪和丈夫一道被捕。她在狱中接触了各种女囚，了解到她们的悲惨命运，这对作者后来的创作有很大影响。日本战败后，山代巴才走出监狱的大门，而丈夫却死于狱中。她回到故乡广岛，领导组织农民协会的活动。1948年发表处女作《款冬花梗》，塑造了一个在封建制度下含垢忍辱，被迫走上反抗道路的农村妇女形象。这一时期的小说还有《萌芽时》、《财主》和《板车之歌》(1955～1956)。中篇小说《板车之歌》是她的代表作，写一个妇女痛苦的一生，是日本农村的阶级压迫的缩影。晚年的作品有《道路虽然黑暗》、《冲过浊流》、《创造民间故事的人们》等。山代巴以描述农村生活著称，尤以塑造农村妇女形象见长。
