本名王影。原是《佛山文艺》编辑，退休后便为杂志撰写武侠小说《武林传奇》在杂志上连载，至今仍在《佛山文艺》上连载武侠小说，计有《武林传奇》、《江湖传奇》、《黑鹰传奇》、《青凤传奇》、《神州传奇》、《岭南一剑》等十余部，现在已成立了专门的戊戟文化公司。

戊老祖籍江西吉安，幼年迁居广西柳州。祖父给他取的名字叫刘祖汉，后来他投笔从戎参加革命时改名为王影。戊戟是他开始写武侠小说时才取的一个笔名。
