燃灯佛舍利塔是通州八景之一,位于通州区北端运河西岸,有极高的艺术价值,也是通州的象征。塔共八角十三层,高约49米,塔基须弥座呈莲花形,塔内原有一尊燃灯佛石像。

燃灯佛舍利塔坐落于通州北城,距北京市中心20公里。该塔建于辽代,清康熙十八年(1679年)因地震塔身倾圮,康熙三十年( 1691年)重建。1900年,八国联军时又遭破坏。“文革”中塔座砖雕全部被毁。1976年唐山地震使塔下莲座震坏,塔身出现许多裂纹。1985年重修,塔顶莲座及各层塔檐补铸铜铃,复原一新。现为北京市文物保护单位。燃灯佛舍利塔原高48米,基围44米。为砖木结构,密檐实心,八角形十三层,须弥座,双束腰,各面均嵌有精美砖雕,花纹非常精细。塔身各角雕有佛像,共104尊,各具姿态。每椽悬风锋(铜铃)一枚,共2248枚,每枚外壁刻有善男信女的姓名。在十三层正南一面斗拱间有一块砖制诗碑由修塔僧撰刻七律一首。塔顶自生榆树一株,树干直径17厘米,高3.7米,树龄200余年,塔顶长树实为罕见。现该树已移植到塔下湖畔。燃灯塔距运河300米,其塔影垂映河中,景色十分美丽。
