若采用干性油（碘值高）改性的称为干性油醇酸树脂，采用不干性油（碘值低）改性的称为不干性油醇酸树脂；醇酸树脂中按含油量的多少又可分为短油度、中油度、长油度、超长油度醇酸树脂。
醇酸树脂生产工艺成熟、原料来源容易，制得的涂膜综合性能良好，具有干性、光泽、柔韧性、附着力好等优点，醇酸树脂可以单独制漆，也可与其它类别树脂混溶（通过引入其它树脂来改进和提高涂膜的某些性能，其中以与氨基树脂配合的氨基烤漆最为重要）后制漆，可以制成清漆，亦可制成色漆，这些产品可以用喷涂、刷涂、浸涂、辊涂等方法施工。因此醇酸树脂及醇酸树脂漆在目前涂料行业中的地位举足轻重，无可替代。
