点轴开发理论最早由陆大道先生提出。他在综合了克里斯泰勒的中心地理论、增长极理论和德国的开发轴理论后，于1984年最早提出，并在1995年出版的《区域发展及其空间结构》一书中最终形成完整的理论体系。
