植物形态：常绿乔木，高可达20米。下部干枝有刺，树皮灰色，成片状剥落；小枝平滑或微被柔毛。叶互生，革质，卵形或椭圆状卵形，长3~7厘米，宽2~4.5厘米，先端渐尖，基部圆形或宽楔形，边缘有锯齿，两面无毛，叶柄长4~10毫米。花单性异株，黄色或黄绿色，腋生总状花序；萼片4片，无花瓣，雄蕊多数，子房上位，1室。浆果球形，熟时黑色。 生态分布：产我国长江流域至南部各省；多生于山坡、林边、溪边，村落附近。 药用部分：根、枝、叶、种子入药，除种子秋季采收外其他全年可采用。 用途：根性味苦、平，无毒。一说酸，涩。能催生利窍。治黄疸、瘰疬、鼠瘘及难产。叶性味苦、涩、寒。能散瘀消肿。用量：根4~6钱。
