古希腊米利都学派哲学家阿那克西曼德使用的术语。希腊文为凊πειρογ，指产生宇宙万物的一种物质本原。这种物质本原没有固定的性质和形状,没有边际,是永恒不灭的，没有规定的，故称为"无限定"，旧译为"无限者"。这个无限定分离出对立物，即热和冷，湿和干等，因对立物的作用产生了天体和万物。阿那克西曼德的"无限定"比古希腊其他哲学家用某种具体物质元素作为万物本原的观点高明，因为任何一种具体的物质元素总有某种规定性，其本身还得加以说明，因而难以解释它是如何产生同它相对立的东西；"无限定"由于本身不具有任何规定性，所以能够产生各种不同物质。从哲学上说，"无限定"是个比较一般的物质概念，这一概念的产生表明了人们认识的深化。
