由煤低温干馏所得的可燃固体产物。产率约为原料煤的50％～70％。色黑多孔，主要成分是碳、灰分和挥发分。其灰分含量取决于原料煤质,挥发分含量约5％～20％（质量）。与焦炭相比，挥发分含量高，孔隙率大而机械强度低。与一氧化碳、蒸汽或氧具有较强的反应活性。是很好的高热值无烟燃料，主要用作工业或民用燃料，也用于合成气、电石生产等，少量用作铜矿或磷矿等冶炼时的还原剂，此外也用作炼焦配煤。
