俗话说：“独木不成林”但是，在形形色色的植物界中也有例外的情况，榕树就是一个典型的例子。
榕树是一种生活在热带的常绿大乔木。榕树的树冠之大，在植物界中可说是绝无仅有的。有的榕树的树冠，可以覆盖1公顷左右的土地，足足有一个半足球场那么大。
榕树不仅枝叶茂盛，而且树枝能够向下生出许多气生根。榕树的一些气生根悬挂在半空中，可以吸收空气中的水分。大多数气生根形成支柱根，活像树干。一棵大榕树，支柱根可多达4300多条。正因为支柱根林立，所以树冠可以不断地向四周扩展，远远望去，真像一片森林。
