又名大陆阶地。高出洋盆的大陆块平台，由大陆架及大陆坡组成。平均宽度102公里，平均坡度0.1～4.3°，平均深度从33米至1400～2500米（有时可达3200米），总面积5500万公里2，约占世界海洋总面积的15.3％。其成因同海平面的变化及地壳构造运动有关。前者因大陆冰川消融，导致海面上升，使部分大陆边缘地区被海水淹没。后者因地壳的垂直升降和水平运动，以及地震与火山活动，使部分地壳陷入海底而成。此外，根据板块构造学说，大陆地壳与大洋地壳发生碰撞、对冲运动时，在俯冲带内，地壳发生断裂、弯曲及向下俯冲等，形成陡峭的斜坡，其上即为面积宽广、坡度较平缓的大陆台阶。
