| 天元术 中国古代求解高次方程的方法。13世纪，高次方程的数值解法是数学难题之一。当时许多数学家都致力于这个问题。在中国，自从贾宪提出二项式系数表和增乘开方法以后，高次方程的解法得到迅速发展。1248年，金代数学家李冶在其著作《测圆海镜》中，系统地介绍了天元术。他改进前人的工作，用天、地分别表示方程的正次幂和负次幂，设天元一为未知数，根据问题的已知条件，列出两个相等的多项式，经相减后得出一个高次方程（天元开方式） ，这与设x为未知数列方程一样。其表示法为：在一次项系数旁记一“元”字（或在常数项旁记一“太”字），“元”以上的系数表示各正次幂，“元”以下的系数表示常数和各负次幂（或“太”以上的系数表示各正次幂 ，“太”以下的系 数表示各负次幂）。例如方程2x2＋18x＋316＝0的天元表示式如下：
