由煤焦化的粗煤气中回收得到的一种轻馏分油。主要成分是单环芳烃。不同的煤质及不同的焦化条件所得到的粗苯量不同，一般每立方米粗煤气中粗苯含量为20～45g，粗苯中苯、甲苯、二甲苯含量占90％以上,其中苯约占70％、甲苯8％～25％、二甲苯2％～5％。此外，还含有少量不饱和化合物如环戊二烯、茚、氧(杂)茚（及其衍生物）、吡啶、酚。粗苯经过蒸馏分离和酸碱洗涤或加氢精制过程，得到化学品苯、甲苯及二甲苯、茚、氧（杂）茚等。茚和氧（杂）茚可制成库马龙树脂，后者用于涂料、橡胶及造纸工业。
