以交通运输企业为会计主体的一种行业会计。广义的交通运输企业包括铁路运输、公路运输、水路运输、航空运输、管道运输等所有交通运输企业，而按照我国现行会计制度规定的狭义的交通运输企业，是指不包括铁路运输、航空运输与管道运输企业在内的其他交通运输企业。财政部于1993年颁布的《（交通）企业会计制度》规定，该制度适应于“设在中华人民共和国境内的所有交通运输企业，包括从事远洋、沿海、内河、公路运输企业、海河港口，仓储企业，外轮代理企业，以及城市公共汽（电）车、出租汽车、轮注、地铁等企业”。本条目采用会计制度规定的口径与工业企业相比，交通运输企业的生产经营过程具有其明显的特征：工业企业的生产经营过程包括供应、生产和销售三个环节，而交通运输企业的经营过程主要包括供应过程和营运过程，没有与生产过程相脱离而独立存在的销售过程。在交通运输企业的供应过程中企业购买燃料、材料，货币资金转化为储备资金；营运过程中，企业要发生各种各样的耗费，包括汽车、船舶、装卸机构等固定资产的折旧、燃材料的消耗、工资支出、其他各项费用等，它们构成运输、装卸等营运业务的成本。在这个过程中，储备资金转化为生产资金。同时，企业向货主、旅客核收运费、装卸费等，收回货币资金，并形成运输、装卸等业务的营运收入。营运收入减去营运业务成本，即为企业的纯收入。其中一部分以税金形式上交国家财政，另一部分按规定提取公积金、公益金，并向投资人分配。上述经济活动即为交通运输企业会计应反映和监督的内容。
