锡石中以类质同相状态存在的钽、铌，用选矿的方法不能将其分离,在炼锡时进入炉渣,成为含钽锡渣。随着钽矿石的贫化和日趋短缺，锡渣中的钽逐渐成了世界钽的主要来源。20世纪50年代时，它在世界总产钽量中的比重微不足道，60年代末达到25％，70年代末已超过50％。从中国南部经泰国和马来西亚的锡矿带钽含量最富。中国广西、广东、云南、湖南、江西等省均有含钽锡矿和含钽锡渣。
各国锡渣的钽含量不等,典型的扎伊尔锡渣含Ta2O5为12％,泰国为8％，马来西亚为3～4％。其他一般锡渣中含Ta2O5小于2％。锡渣富集成含(Ta+Nb)2O5大于30％的人造钽精矿，再采用火法和湿法冶炼。火法一般是将锡渣和焦炭（或铝粒）、石灰混合，在电弧炉中还原熔炼，生成铁钨锡钽铌合金,然后将合金用电解法、NaNO3氧化焙烧法和酸碱处理。湿法只有氟氢酸－氟硅酸工艺取得了好的经济效果。
