    工程结构中主要承受压力,有时也同时承受弯矩的竖向杆件,用以支承梁、桁架、楼板等。按截面形式分有方柱、圆柱、矩形柱、工字形柱、H形柱、T形柱、L形柱、十字形柱、双肢柱、格构柱。按材料分有石柱、砖柱、木柱、钢柱、钢筋混凝土柱、钢管混凝土柱和各种组合柱。短柱在轴心荷载作用下的破坏是材料强度破坏,长柱在同样荷载作用下的破坏是屈曲,丧失稳定。柱是结构中极为重要的部分,柱的破坏将导致整个结构的损坏与倒坍。
