   产生于山区沟谷中或山坡地上的,含有大量松散固体碎屑的、不均质的特殊洪流。具有突然暴发、历时短暂、来势凶猛、破坏力大等特点,是山区常见的一种自然灾害。

   泥石流的形成必须同时具备3个条件:①流域内有丰富的、松散的固体物质。②流域内谷坡陡、沟床比降大。③沟谷的中、上游区有暴雨洪水或冰雪融水和湖泊、水库决溃等提供充分的水源。在断裂构造发育、地震频发、降水集中、水土流失严重的山区,以及古冰川发育、现代冰川活跃的高山地区易形成泥石流。在时间上,泥石流多产生于数年干旱后,或人类不合理开发山地后的多雨暴雨年份,或气候转暖、冰川衰退、积雪消融、冻土解冻的年份。泥石流是高浓度的固、液两相流。固体物质含30%~80%,流体容重1.5~2.3吨/米3。固体物质的多少、成分、补给方式决定了泥石流的性质、类型和规模。泥石流有多种分类:①按形成特点可分为冰川型、降雨型泥石流。②按沟谷形态分为沟谷型、山坡型泥石流。③按物质组成分为泥石流、泥流、水石流。④按结构-流变分类,可分为稀性泥石流(容重1.5~1.8吨/米3,含沙量800~1200千克/米3),紊动强;粘性泥石流(容重>2.0吨/米3,含沙量>1600千克/米3 ,以层流为主;过渡性泥石流,介于以上二者之间。⑤按规模可分为小型(一次物质总方量<10万立方米),中型(一次物质总方量10~50万立方米),大型(一次物质总方量为50~100万立方米)和特大型(一次物质总方量>100万立方米)。
