切削部分在工作行程终了时能自动张开或收缩的螺纹加工工具﹐包括加工外螺纹用的自动张开板牙头和加工内螺纹的自动收缩丝锥。自动开合螺纹切头快速退刀时﹐工件或刀具不必反转。自动开合螺纹切头常有4个梳形刀头(见图 自动开合螺纹切头的类型 )。
自动张开板牙头按梳刀的形状分圆梳刀式和平梳刀式两类﹐后者按梳刀进给(见机床)方向又分径向的和切向的两种。普通的圆梳刀式自动张开板牙头可加工直径为 4~60毫米的外螺纹。自动收缩丝锥只有径向平梳刀式一种﹐通常用於加工直径在36毫米以上的螺孔。按使用方式﹐自动开合螺纹切头有旋转式和非旋转式两种﹐分别用於自动车床﹑转塔车床﹑钻床和套丝机等机床上。自动开合螺纹切头在切削螺纹时﹐由机床的主轴或刀架带动完成工作行程﹐在工作行程终了时﹐固定在机床上的挡铁拨动螺纹切头上的拨叉或卡箍﹐触发刀头动作机构﹐使四个刀头同时张开或缩拢﹐刀头的位置可根据加工的螺纹尺寸準确地调整。自动开合螺纹切头的梳刀通常是用高速钢经磨製而成﹐精度较高。梳刀能自动张开或收缩﹐故生產率高﹐虽结构复杂﹐但应用仍很广泛。与自动张开板牙头相类似的还有自动开合螺纹滚压头﹐它利用金属的塑性变形滚压出螺纹。
