七连屿并不是一个岛，而是指西沙群岛中七座相邻不远的岛屿。属于宣德群岛的一部分。
距西沙主岛永兴岛东北方向4海里之外，有七座岛礁紧密相联，相隔很近，犹如珍珠一般串在一起。远古来此打鱼的渔民因此形象地把这七个岛屿统称为“七连屿”。 “七连屿”的七个小岛：西沙洲、北岛、中岛、三峙仔、北沙洲、中沙洲、南沙洲，面积都不大，一般都是0．4平方公里左右。七个小岛中，有好几个相距仅几百米，远的也不过是一、二海里。七个小岛上都没有任何淡水，其中的西沙洲、南沙洲基本上是荒沙滩地，因为常受风暴潮的袭击、侵蚀，没有什么植物。渔民们往往喜欢在北岛“安营扎寨”。北岛上的原生植物海岸桐、麻枫桐长得一丛丛的；岛的面积也相对大些；岛周围还有自然形成的砂堤，能避风挡浪。
七连屿终年高温，无冬春秋季，常风大，灾害性天气发生频繁，多热带气旋，暴雨、大风、干旱。台风产生的风暴巨浪袭击对一些沙洲的影响非常大，甚至可以整体搬迁沙洲。曾经有渔民和调查人员发现在几次台风之后七连屿有几块沙洲消失，而在附近另一位置却生长出新的沙洲。这几年因为台风的关系，在最南边新形成了两个沙洲——西新沙洲和东新沙洲。
恶劣天气却挡不住渔民来此的脚步。七连屿的北岛渔民聚集多的时候，有100多人，少的时候也有40来人。因为这一带的鱼类生物太丰富了。七连屿一带海域不仅有几百种浮游生物，还有400多种名优鱼类和经济鱼类，石斑鱼、鲨鱼、金枪鱼，刺尾鱼、蝴蝶鱼、隆头鱼等都可常见。礁盘5米以内，还有各种名贵螺，如砗磲等。龙虾也可常见，来这里的渔民除了专门钓鲨鱼的，还有专门捉龙虾的。
