煤矿中也称煤柱。是为保护地貌、地面建筑物和主要井巷,分割采区和矿井，防水、防火,留下不采或暂时不采的部分矿体(包括煤层)。根据矿体埋藏深度、倾角、岩石性质、被保护对象和所需时间等因素，确定矿柱的形状和尺寸。按用途分为：保安矿柱、护巷矿柱、境界矿柱、断层矿柱和防水矿柱等。
保安矿柱 井筒周围和建筑物下面暂时不采或永久不采的一部分矿体（见建筑物下采煤）。根据受保护建筑物和构筑物的级别，确定他们的保护带宽度。沿保护带周边按岩石移动角向下划出不能开采的范围，该范围内的矿体，即为保安矿柱，见图。
护巷矿柱 在巷道两侧或上、下部，保留一部分矿体不采，作为临时护巷矿柱。
境界矿柱 为保护各个区域的安全,在采区之间、阶段或水平之间、矿井之间，留有隔离矿柱，以便各个区域独立开采。
断层和破碎带矿柱 断层和破碎带岩层破碎，有时含水和沼气。在断层和破碎带周围，保留一部分矿体不采，作为安全矿柱。
防水矿柱 在河流、湖泊、蓄水地区和含水层等水体下面采矿时，水和流砂可能沿裂缝涌入井下，威胁矿井安全。视地质条件，在水体下留一定高度的矿体，作为防水矿柱（见水体下采煤）。
