大蚕蛾科昆虫的 1种。主要分布东南亚的温带和热带地区。中国记载的地区有湖南、福建、台湾、广东、广西、江西、四川、云南。寄主已发现20余种,主要为害乌桕、樟以及柳、大叶合欢、甘薯、狗尾草等。
喙退化,成虫不取食。前翅顶角显著突出,体翅赤褐色;前、后翅上的中室端均有较大的三角形透明斑。
在闽北1年发生2代,成虫寿命9~11日,一只雌蛾可产卵百余粒,卵期8~14日。幼虫蜕皮5次,共6龄,全幼虫期49~60天。第1代蛹期22天,第2代以蛹在茧虫越冬,依靠茧的保护附着在寄主的枝干上,蛹期长达193天。幼虫吐丝较家蚕丝粗而短,有灰白色光泽,所结的丝茧外层疏而内层紧,初结成时外面有银灰色光泽,约一日后变为灰褐色。(见彩图)
