汉时诸侯于宗庙祭祀时随同酎酒所献的黄金。酎是一种自一月至八月分三次追加原料，反复酿成的优质酒。汉文帝时规定，每年八月在首都长安祭高祖庙献酎饮酎时，诸侯王和列侯都要按封国人口数献黄金助祭，每千口俸金四两，余数超过五百口的也是四两，由少府验收。酎金之制即由此产生。另外，在九真、交趾、日南等南方诸地有食邑者，以犀角、玳瑁、象牙、翡翠等代替黄金。诸侯献酎金时，皇帝亲临受金。所献黄金如分量或成色不足，王削县，侯免国。汉武帝刘彻即曾借检查献酎金不足为名，削弱和打击诸侯王及列侯势力。元鼎五年（前 112），由于列侯无人响应号召从军赴南越，到九月即借酎金不如法夺去一百零六名列侯的爵位。丞相赵周也以知情不举的罪名下狱，被迫自杀。此后，也时见坐酎金失律免侯的记载。有关酎金的法令在西汉名为"酎金律"。
