   由粒径为0.0625~0.0039毫米(mm)的粉砂的含量占50%以粉砂岩标本的一种碎屑沉积岩。除粉砂以外其它由砂、粘土或化学沉淀物组成。按粒度划分为粗粉砂岩(0.0625~0.0312mm)和细粉砂岩(0.0312~0.0039mm)。按碎屑成分划分为石英粉砂岩、长石粉砂岩、岩屑粉砂岩(少见)和它们间的过渡类型。根据胶结物成分划分为粘土质粉砂岩、铁质粉砂岩、钙质粉砂岩和白云质粉砂岩。黄土也是一种疏松的或半固结的粉砂质沉积物。粉砂岩多形成于河漫滩、三角洲、潟湖和海洋的较深水部位。
