性质:一属革兰阳性、无芽孢、不运动的厌氧性球菌。细胞直径2~3μm,一般8个细胞相互排列成立方堆状。生长pH值1~9.8。严格进行发酵性代谢。葡萄糖发酵产生二氧化碳、氢和乙酸等。过氧化氢酶阴性。不产生色素。营养要求高。主要生活在人或其他动物的肠道中。G+C mol%值为29~31。模式种为胃八叠球菌(S.ventriculi)。
