是几何形态不均匀程度量的特征，是描述事物分形特征的一种分维数。分维数，指表征事物量的独立实数参数的维数是分数，维数是分数的几何形态总称为分形（fractals）。匈牙利科学家A.Renyi定义信息维DI为：`D_I=\lim_{\epsilon->oo}\frac{lnI}{ln\epsilon}`，式中ε为几何分形测量时，所设定的单位格子（或盒子）边长的刻度数目，$I=sump_iln(1//p_i)$为事物发生的信息量，pi是测量器的每个格子（或盒子）被测出的概率，$p_i=C_M^m(1//N)^m((N-1)//N)^{M-m}$，N为测量器全部单位格子数，M为被测物小面元（或小体元）的总个数，第i个格子（或盒子）中包含m个小面元（或小体元）。任何生物物质形态（脏器、蛋白质或DNA等）的信息维都可能成为临床鉴别诊断的特征指标，它是近年来形态量化的病因学研究的内容之一。
