为实现预警目的监视和发现敌方弹道导弹发射的侦察卫星。又称导弹预警卫星。预警卫星往往兼有探测核爆炸的任务。在预警卫星出现之前，对弹道导弹发射的探测主要依靠地面上的防空雷达网。雷达发射的电波信号沿直线传播,受地球曲率的影响,使雷达发现导弹的距离受到限制，不能尽早捕获目标，所能掌握的预警时间很短。预警卫星通常运行在地球静止卫星轨道或周期约12小时的大椭圆轨道上,一般由几颗卫星组成预警网,覆盖范围很大，能克服雷达预警的缺点,延长预警时间,便于捕捉战机，及时组织战略防御和反攻。在现代战争中，预警卫星是有效的防御工具。预警卫星上装有红外探测器和电视摄像机。遇有地面或水下发射弹道导弹的情况，高灵敏度的红外探测器就能够探测到导弹主动段飞行期间发动机尾焰的红外辐射并发出警报。与些同时带有远摄镜头的高分辨率电视摄像机对准有关的空域，跟踪导弹并自动或根据遥控指令向地面发送目标图像，在地面电视屏幕上同时显示出导弹尾焰图像的运动轨迹。根据尾焰在不同高度上形状和亮度的差异，可识别出目标的真伪，及时准确地判明导弹发射。预警卫星上一般还装有核辐射探测器,包括X射线探测器、γ射线探测器和中子计数器等，因此它也能监视和发现大气层内和外层空间所发生的核爆炸事件。典型的预警卫星有美国的 647预警卫星（又称综合型导弹预警卫星）、60年代初发射的"发现者"19号、21号和"米达斯"号导弹预警试验卫星，还有专门探测核爆炸的"维拉"号卫星。苏联的预警卫星采用近地点(约500公里)在南半球、远地点(约40000公里)在北半球、倾角约63°～65°的大椭圆轨道，有的也采用地球静止卫星轨道。
