1956年2月于辽宁鞍山建立,是中国第一个为钢铁冶炼开发铁矿山（包括锰矿、铬铁矿、钒铁矿、钛铁矿以及炼铁辅助原料矿山等）、选矿和烧结球团的专业设计研究院。该院业务范围有：地质、水文地质、采矿（露天、坑内）、井建、选矿、烧结球团、总图运输、电力、电讯、自动化、矿山机械、矿山机修、给水排水、采暖通风、热力、工业建筑、水工建筑（尾矿设施）、矿山工业环境保护评价、工程概算、技术经济评价等20个专业，组成11个设计室。此外，尚有选矿试验、烧结试验、化学分析、环保试验、水工试验等，设有研究室。并有相应的试验厂和为设计研究服务的电子计算机设备。
该院为鞍钢、本钢、首钢、包钢、太钢、酒钢、上钢等钢铁联合企业设计矿石原料基地，并承担着17个省、市、自治区的冶金矿山设计研究任务。还承揽一些国外冶金矿山的设计项目。
