公园地处西湖东南偏北。一面濒临西湖，一面紧靠湖滨路。
湖滨公园长达一公里，它由六块大小不等的园地连缀而成。园内种植的垂柳、松柏、香樟组成了绿树浓荫，精致的花坛配置的各式花卉，色彩缤纷、香气四溢，恰似一条绚丽多彩的七色缎带。沿湖是造型优美，色呈绿色，雕工精致的石柱路灯。在公园的北区还筑以花架和供人品茗休息的廊台楼亭等小品，既体现了现代城市公园的气息，也不失湖滨公园所具有的清新、整齐、清净、开朗的特色。
“我有痴情望如画，不知己亦画中人”是湖滨公园的真实写照。湖滨公园是西湖风景名胜的窗口，它呈一条绿色的长廊，轻轻飘洒在西子湖的东岸。从这里看西湖水，湖水盈盈，碧波千顷。晴时，风和日丽，西子湖水格外明澈，微风吹来，吹皱湖面，像是一块掀动着的绿色软缎。雨时，轻烟弥漫，西子湖水色如墨色，湖水跳珠，珠落雪溅，好似一幅淡浓相宜的水墨画。当晨曦初展，或待夕阳西下，西湖即将垂下黑线绒的幕帘，湖水映着霞辉，金光闪闪，分外美丽。凝望湖景，湖中三岛、苏白二堤、塔影、厅石、绿树、星点红瓦，历历在目。
湖滨公园虽地处杭城的繁华中心地带，但却由低低的米黄色的铁栅栏，并配置以浓荫的树木与湖滨路隔开，于闹中取静，较为安谧。湖滨公园秀色满园，美不胜收。
