1856年第一个问世的合成染料苯胺紫即属碱性染料。之后陆续出现了品红、碱性蓝、结晶紫、孔雀绿、罗达明等许多品种，它们大多属于三苯甲烷、吖啶、嗪、噻嗪等化学结构类型。如:结晶紫（C.I.碱性紫3）和罗达明B（C.I.碱性紫10）。
50年代起，随着合成纤维工业的发展，出现了一类主要用于腈纶纤维染色的新的碱性染料品种，习惯上将这类染料称为阳离子染料。
碱性染料对于羊毛、丝绸、皮革以及用单宁媒染剂处理过的棉纤维都具有亲合力，着色力强、色光艳丽。但是碱性染料耐洗、耐晒坚牢度很差，现在很少应用于棉、毛等纤维织物的染色，大多数用于纸张（包括复写纸）、打字色带、色淀照相、生物等材料的着色。
