    化学组成为K1-x(Al,Fe)2[AI1-xSi3+xO10](OH)2的层状结构硅酸盐矿物 。K,Fe离子含量随着产出的地质时代和光性的不同而变。一般早古生代产出的海绿石的K2O 含量较高,现代海洋沉积物中的海绿石Fe的含量较高。新鲜海绿石呈绿色、暗绿色。晶体属单斜晶系。呈叶片状至滚圆粒状或不规则蠕虫状、板状等。不透明,莫氏硬度2~3 ,比重2.2~2.8。关于海绿石的成因有不同看法,多数人认为海绿石在水深100~300米的浅海环境、缓慢沉积和有蒙脱石存在的条件下形成。海底软泥中的海绿石是典型的海洋沉积物。海绿石主要用于水质处理和改良土壤。
