日本电影导演。1915年11月20日生于三重县伊势。幼时喜爱绘画艺术。1933年入JO摄影所搞美术片，1936年转入助理导演部，受教于伊丹万作、阿部丰等。他长于拍摄讽刺喜剧片，创作构思风格独特，具有不同一般的幽默感。成名作是1958年执导的《烧毁》，表现一个纯洁正直的青年，在现代社会冷酷的矛盾中，幻想破灭，变得仇恨一切的过程。50～60年代，他一度致力于把文学作品搬上银幕,在影片中变换手法,探索新的戏路，因而这一时期的作品风格很不一致。1965年，他拍了一部纪录片《东京奥林匹克》，获得成功。创造了当时的最高放映纪录。市川崑的其他主要代表作是《阿普》（又译《糊涂先生》，1953）、《缅甸竖琴》(1956)、《处刑的房间》(1956)、《破戒》（1961）、《犬神家族》(1976)以及1985年重拍的《缅甸竖琴》等。
