分子式C3H7NO2S，分子量121.16。学名巯基丙氨酸。无色晶体。溶于水、乙醇、乙酸和氨水，不溶于乙醚、丙酮、乙酸乙酯、苯、二硫化碳和四氯化碳。在中性和弱碱性溶液中能被空气氧化成胱氨酸。用于药物的制造；直接可用于毛发的生长，还用于治疗肝炎、肝性中毒、锑剂中毒、放射性药物的中毒和过敏性病等；也用于生物化学和营养学方面的研究。先由a-角蛋白水解分离出胱氨酸，再经还原得半胱氨酸。
