The leachate from a Hong Kong landfill, containing 15 70 g/L of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 2 26 g/L of ammonia nitrogen (NH 3-N), was first treated in a UASB (upflow anaerobic sludge blanket) reactor at 37 ℃.

Some problems to which attention should be paid in the start running of the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor are discussed,such as temperature control,sludge stirring,influent distribution mode,influent concentration and anomaly handling and so on.

The immobilized anaerobic sludge ball was prepared by using chitosan as embedding agent,and waste water containing TNT was degraded by using upflow anaerobic sludge bed.
