纯阳观在玉泉院东，文仙峪口，始建于明，因供奉八仙之一的吕洞宾得名。又因观内两厢有民国年间道士孟元照及弟子孙亨纯募修的十二孔石洞，以又被当地人俗称为十二洞。
观的建筑模式为一座北方园林，占地十余亩，观门前曲水修竹，观内古树婆娑，且伴有奇花异草交相辉映，环境清幽，雅静宜人。观的主体建筑为吕祖殿，座南向北，五开间，砖木结构。殿堂正中供奉吕祖坐像，其双眉斜飞，凤眼溢彩，神态端祥，超然物外。传说他成仙之前曾在纯阳观南的文仙峪隐居修行，故峪被命名为文仙峪，他打坐的地方被称为吕洞宾造墨处。又因后世多有隐者假追随吕祖仙踪，文仙峪内吕祖庙香火甚盛，还立了庙会，每年正月初九，香客纷至沓来，小小的文仙峪容纳不了，后人便在文仙峪口筑观以方便香客，又称其为文仙峪吕祖庙的下院。
