狭义的古地理图是岩相古地理图。它根据某一时期海相和陆相沉积物的分布，恢复该时期海洋和大陆的轮廓；根据沉积物的物理、化学性质以及所含的有机体等，恢复该时期陆上沼泽、湖泊、河流和沙漠的分布。广义的古地理图，是表示一切古自然地理要素的地图。不论是从岩相直接复原而来，或是根据地质纪录、考古材料等作多方面分析间接成图的，都属于古地理图范围。包括岩相古地理图、古生物地理图、古气候图、古地貌图、古水文图，以及综合性的古自然地理图等。除了地图固有的空间属性外，古地理图的时间属性具有特别重要的意义。它所表示的现象，由于资料的限制，只能是过去某一相当长时期的平均状态，而不可能是"瞬时"现象，因而一幅古地理图的代表性和实用价值与所表现的时期及时间尺度的选择有密切关系。
