又称络合催化聚合。是不饱和乙烯基单体首先在具有空位的活性催化剂上配位，形成某种形式的配位化合物，然后再聚合的反应。配位聚合反应的特点是可以选择不同的催化剂和聚合条件以制备特定立构规整的聚合物。高分子工业中的许多重要产品（如高密度聚乙烯、等规聚丙烯、顺丁橡胶和异戊橡胶等）都是用配位负离子聚合反应制备的。
配位聚合是一个离子型聚合过程，按照其增长链端基的性质可以分为配位负离子和配位正离子聚合。活性链按负离子机理增长的称为配位负离子聚合；反之，则称为配位正离子聚合。
配位聚合的增长反应包括两步：第一步，单体在催化剂上配位并活化；第二步，被活化的单体在过渡金属烷基键M─R中间插入而聚合，因而常称为插入聚合。这两步反应反复地进行就形成聚合物链。以配位负离子聚合为例：
