位于海南昌江石碌镇南约3公里的金牛岭山麓，矿区总面积60平方公里，铁矿储量约3亿吨，平均品位51.2%，最高达69%，是一座现代化的大型露天矿山。铁矿石以质优品位高而闻名海内外，为全国重点大矿之一。
石碌铁矿自古代民间手工开采至今约有三四百年的历史了。1939年日本侵略者侵占海南后，强征几万民工，以刺刀和皮鞭逼迫民工在金牛岭上没日没夜地开采，对石碌铁矿进行疯狂掠夺性开发，把50多万吨的富铁矿石运往日本。日本侵略者投降后，国民党政府接收矿山，他们不但没有恢复生产，反而变卖机器设备，铁矿区萋萋荒草一片。1950年5月海南岛解放，同年10月，中南军政委员会工业部组织人力对石碌矿山进行修复。并恢复生产。
石碌铁矿现在已成为一座别具风情的铁城。乘车沿着宽敞的环山公路上到矿山顶峰，放眼四顾，方圆一二十里山水美景尽收眼底。到处充满热带情调，风光绮丽，青山环抱，多姿的石碌河像一条绿色的飘带绕城而过。石碌城里，宿舍区内，到处是浓荫如盖的林木和争妍斗艳的花草。一个个的小庭院里四季花果飘香，终年绿荫怡人。
