化学组成为 (Mg,Fe)2Fe3+[BO3]O2、晶体属正交（斜方）晶系的硼酸盐矿物。组分中铁原子数超过镁时称硼铁矿。晶体呈针状、长柱状、纤维状、毛发状，集合体通常呈放射状。暗绿色至黑色，随铁含量增加颜色变深，条痕绿黑色至黑色，光泽暗淡，纤维状集合体带丝绢光泽。摩斯硬度5.5～6，比重随铁含量的增加而增大，一般3.6～4.7，具弱磁性。主要产于镁质夕卡岩中，中国东北风城、宽甸、辑安、复县及河北涞源等地均有硼镁铁矿产出。世界著名产地有美国加利福尼亚、土耳其等。硼镁铁矿是提炼硼的矿物原料。(见彩图)
