   鸟类表皮细胞衍生的角质化产物。被覆在体表,质轻而韧,略有弹性,具防水性,有护体、保温、飞翔等功能。成鸟的羽毛通常分为3种:①正羽。包括被覆体外的大型羽片(廓羽)以及在翅和尾部着生的飞羽和尾羽。飞羽和尾羽的数目是恒定的。羽轴端为羽根,深植于皮肤中。羽轴两侧斜生许多并行的羽支,各羽支两侧更分出排列整齐的羽小支。羽支远侧的1列羽小支具有许多羽纤支,其尖端有细钩,与羽支近侧的羽小支连接,组成扁平而有弹性的羽片,以扇动空气和保护身体。②绒羽,又名。密生在正羽下面,羽支细长成丝状,着生于羽根的顶端。羽小支短,不具羽纤支或细钩,因此羽支蓬松成绒形。水禽绒羽比较发达,鸭绒就是这种羽毛。鹭类、鹦鹉类、鹰类往往具有一种特殊绒羽,稍一触动即碎成粉状,所以称粉,它可以除去体外寄生虫和污物。③纤羽。羽轴细长,杂在正羽和绒羽之中。羽支和羽小支数目很少或者没有,是一种退化了的正羽。

   鸟的羽毛轻而耐磨,是热的不良导体。飞羽与尾羽对飞翔有很大意义。鸟类对羽毛常加洗浴,  抖掉羽毛间的尘埃,并用嘴梳整,啄尾脂腺分泌的油脂涂抹全身羽毛。
