鲼形目科属的1种。全长约50～70厘米,重1500克,大者可达5000克以上。体盘平扁亚圆形;尾前部稍宽扁，后部细长如鞭（见图）；吻部稍尖突,吻长为体盘长的1/4；眼小；喷水孔位于眼后，约与眼径等大；口小，波曲,口底乳突5个；牙细小，铺石状排列；腹鳍后缘平切，前、后角钝圆；尾细长如鞭，尾长比体盘长2～2.7倍；具尾刺，在尾刺后方具一低的皮膜,长约与吻长相等,下方的皮膜软明显延长；幼体光滑，头后正中有一扁平结刺；成体自头后至尾刺前有一纵行结刺，后面几枚较大呈棘状；肩区各有一列结刺；体背面赤褐色，边缘浅淡，腹面白色。分布于中国东海和南海。也见于中国西江上游的南宁和龙州。朝鲜西南、日本南部、菲律宾沿海亦有分布。
赤为暖水性底层鱼类，栖息于近海沙泥底质的海底。摄食贝类与甲壳类。用延绳钓或底拖网捕捞，产量多。肉可食。肝脏可制鱼肝油。
