当今全球经济受市场力量左右，并非受生态学原理制约。令入遗憾的是，市场的信号并不能真实地反映商品或服务的全部成本。市场价格往往只体现资源的劳动价值。比如，煤炭的价格其实只是开采煤炭的劳动价格，并不反映资源本身的价值以及资源使用过程中可能造成损害（排放二氧化碳导致温室效应、排放二氧化硫导致酸雨、呼吸道疾病等）应给予的适当补偿。所以，市场提供给各级经济决策者的信息往往是些不完全的。尤其是在当今世界经济需求向自然系统的极限不断施以重压的条件下，依靠这种被扭曲的市场信号来引导企业和政府决策，造就了一种被扭曲了的市场经济%26#8212;%26#8212;一种正在戕害其自然支待系统的经济。
与经济学家不同，生态学家不仅认识到自然资源和生态过程的重要价值，而且还认识到，要想有效保护人类赖以生存的自然和环境基础，就必须把各类生态环境成本加以核算，并使其体现在市场信号中，进而构建基于相对完全信息基础上的生态市场经济。
