一种醛。分子式CH3CH=O。无色易流动液体,有刺激性气味。熔点-121℃,沸点20.8℃,相对密度 0.7834(18/4℃)。可溶于水、乙醇、乙醚、丙酮和苯。易燃,易挥发。蒸气与空气能形成爆炸性混合物,爆炸极限4.0%~57.0%(体积 )。易氧化而成醋酸。在少量酸存在下很易聚合成三聚乙醛(液体,熔点124℃),低温时生成多聚乙醛。以上两种聚合体能在少量硫酸作用下分解为乙醛。在工业上主要由乙炔在高汞盐的催化下水合而生成;新的生产方法是将乙烯在氯化铜-氯化钯的催化下用空气直接氧化  。主要用于生产乙酸、乙酸乙酯和乙酸酐,也用于制备季戊四醇、巴豆醛、巴豆酸和水合三氯乙醛。
