工业生态学是生态工业的理论基础。工业生态学是一门研究社会生产活动中自然资源从源、流到汇的全代谢过程、组织管理体制以及生产、消费、调控行为的动力学机制、控制论方法及其与生命支持系统相互关系的系统科学。
工业生态学通过%26#8220;供给链网%26#8221;分析（类似食物链网）和物料平衡核算等方法分析系统结构变化，进行功能模拟和分析产业流（输入流、产出流）来研究工业生态系统的代谢机理和控制方法。工业生态学的思想包含了%26#8220;从摇篮到坟墓%26#8221;的全过程管理系统观，即在产品的整个生命周期内不应对环境和生态系统造成危害，产品生命周期包括原材料采掘、原材料生产、产品制造、产品使用以及产品用后处理。系统分析是产业生态学的核心方法，在此基础上发展起来的工业代谢分折和生命周期评价是目前工业生态学中普遍使用的有效方法。工业生态学以生态学的理论观点考察工业代谢过程，亦即从取自环境到返回环境的物质转化全过程，研究工业活动和生态环境的相互关系，以研究调整、改进当前工业生态链结构的原则和方法，建立新的物质闭路循环，使工业生态系统与生物圈兼容并持久生存下去。
