A letter by a Chinese factory translator written in 1918 was read out at a ceremony in Paris on Sunday commemorating the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

In the letter, the 23-year-old Chinese translator describes the atmosphere in the factory she was working at in Rouen when war ended.

"In the city, it was already a human tide, men and women, young and old, soldiers and civilian, people from many different ethnic origins were marching together hand in hand singing and cheering," wrote Ku Chin Chin.

The ceremony, held under the Arc de Triomphe, was attended by leaders and  representatives from a number of different countries including France, Germany and the United States.
