2018-11-09
In stories this week, we have a parade of pioneering veteran cars on a historic route in the UK, an amazing scarf that protects against air pollution and more, a bridal couple who gets a ride to their wedding reception in a police car, an eco-friendly Toyota truck that can actually make pizza, and an incredible light and sound installation at the Tower of London to commemorate the end of World War I.
All the interesting, odd anecdotes from around the world are here, in our news review.
Pioneering veteran cars wow huge crowds on historic UK route
As an unseasonably mild London was still covered in darkness, nearly 400 pioneering veteran cars, their intrepid drivers and plucky passengers gathered in Hyde Park.
They waited for daybreak to signal the start of the remarkable Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run supported by Hiscox.
More than 120 years have passed since the start of the original Emancipation Run, held in 1896 to celebrate the recently passed Locomotives on Highways Act.
This raised the speed limit for "light locomotives" from 4 to 14 mph and abolished the need for a man to walk ahead waving a red flag.
Amazing scarf protects against pollution, allergens and infection
Air pollution is a major problem around the world, but one company is helping people stay safe, no matter where they live.
Bioscarf has created a stylish accessory that doubles as a safety mask for people living in places with high concentrations of pollution.
These handy scarves help fight against air pollutants, allergens and viral infections, like colds and the flu.
The Bioscarf is roughly 7 feet long and just under a foot wide, making it ideal for covering your face into when cold winds blow.
Police give bride, groom lift to reception after car breaks down
Sian and Josh Chapman made an unexpected arrival at their wedding reception, turning up in a police car.
Their chauffeur-driven 80-year-old Austin Healey had broken down on the way to the venue, and the couple was lucky enough to be picked up by a police patrol car passing by.
Sian and Josh made it to the reception just 25 minutes later than planned after they tied the knot at North Hykeham.
Eco-friendly Toyota truck makes its own pizza
Appearing at Toyota’s 2018 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show display, the one-of-a-kind, zero-emission Tundra Pie Pro is a mobile pizza factory that takes the party wherever it goes.
The starting point was a Tundra SR5 that was torn down to a bare rolling chassis and then reassembled from the ground up. This car's only fuel byproduct is potable water.
In the back, Toyota's Motorsports Technical Center installed a self-sufficient pizza kitchen. The first robot arm will pull a pizza from the fridge, put it in the conveyor oven and close the fridge door. The second robot arm picks up the completed pizza, cuts it into six slices and boxes it up.
Tower of London marks end of WWI with light, sound
As the nation commemorates the centenary of the end of the World War I, a new installation at the Tower of London, Beyond the Deepening Shadow: The Tower Remembers, will fill the moat with thousands of individual flames. It’s a public act of remembrance for the lives of the fallen, honoring their sacrifice.
The unfolding visual spectacle will be accompanied by a specially commissioned sound installation -- a sonic exploration of the shifting tide of political alliances, friendship, love and loss in war.
