Int'l mediation efforts on Israel-Gaza conflict
2012-11-20 (Xinhua)   2012-11-20 11:25:25

BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhuanet) -- For the 6th day in a row, conflict between and Gaza has escalated. Israeli forces are continuing air strikes they say are only aimed at stopping rocket attacks into Israel.

As the death toll in the conflict has mounted to more than 100 people, international mediation efforts to put an end to the violence are ongoing.

Continuous efforts from Tony Blair, the International Middle East envoy has already held a series of meetings with Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

During a meeting with Israeli President Shimon Peres in Jerusalem, Blair pushed for a cease-fire between the two sides. Peres reiterated that Israel is only stopping the rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip.

In a meeting with Palestinian Leader Mahmoud Abbas, both emphasized efforts should be on resuming the peace process in the Middle East.

A delegation of the Muslim Brotherhood also arrived in the Gaza Strip on Monday. The leader of the delegation said the group will continue to support Hamas and the Palestinian people.

Despite the visit only being a few hours long, it is considered a demonstration of the group’s solidarity with Hamas. ’s prime minister said that negotiations with Israel and the Palestinians over a ceasefire are still ongoing. But he also noted the truce negotiation is the first thing needed.

Hisham Kandil, Egyptian PM, said, "The first thing that we need to do is to have a ceasefire and negotiate some sort of, you know, negotiate a truce, and then work out a peace process leading to the establishment of the Palestinian state, independent Palestinian state with complete authorities."

Qatar’s emir, who visited Gaza earlier this month, said Israel should lift its siege of the Gaza Strip. The emir added Israel would not halt its offensive in Gaza unless it met strong resistance.
